YOUR BRICKWORK ENQUIRY
Plan your brickwork work
Discuss brickwork repairs, a new wall or an addition with the existing construction and desired result described. Matching units, mortar and finish need an assessed specification.
What to include in your enquiry
- The wall, area and work you need
- Existing brick or mortar condition and preferred appearance
- Access, nearby structures and any known property controls
- State whether you own, rent or manage the property and who can authorise this brickwork work
What should the quote cover?
Compare preparation, materials, joints, support requirements, access and finishing on the same scope. Ask how matching limits are handled and whether the underlying cause of damage requires separate investigation.
Is matching the brick colour enough to specify a repair?
No. Dimensions, properties, joint details and the surrounding construction also matter. Ask for a compatible repair specification rather than selecting solely by appearance.
Property and responsibility checks
For a retained wall, ask about actual brick size, mortar, finish and sound material. Matching appearance alone does not establish compatibility, and the appraisal does not specify every Newmarket property.
- Identify the actual property, asset and owner before commissioning changes
- Include relevant plans, reports or permission information; do not assume approval
- Agree access, protection and making good where the work affects retained surfaces

New work and repairs need different briefs
Quick answer
Discuss brickwork repairs, a new wall or an addition with the existing construction and desired result described. Matching units, mortar and finish need an assessed specification.
Discuss new brickwork, masonry repairs or repointing, with the location, existing materials and finish agreed for the job.
A new wall, a damaged opening and repointing an existing elevation are different projects. Describe the purpose, dimensions if known and the condition of retained work. The business needs to assess support, exposure and adjoining details before choosing a method. A brick sample alone does not define the construction. Ask whether design or structural input is required and what is included. A repair proposal should explain the cause and extent rather than simply cover visible cracks.

Cracked, loose or moving masonry
Keep clear where material is unstable and obtain direct appropriate help. Cracking does not prove one cause from a generic online rule. Explain how it developed and any associated work or water symptoms. A builder may need a structural professional’s assessment before repair. Repointing or replacing visible units does not automatically resolve movement. Avoid dismantling or propping a wall yourself to test it. Once assessed, agree the repair and any monitoring or follow-up separately.

Repointing and compatible materials
Repointing concerns joints and should suit the existing masonry and its condition. Historic England’s wall guidance advises compatibility in traditional construction; a harder mortar is not automatically an improvement. Ask what assessment supports the proposed material, extent and finish. Unit repairs and water-entry defects may need separate attention. Do not assume repointing an entire elevation is necessary where a reasoned local repair would suffice. Matching expectations and retained limitations should be explained before the work.
| Work | Clarify |
|---|---|
| Repointing | Condition, compatible joint material and agreed extent. |
| Local unit repair | Cause, matching and retained limitations. |
| New structural work | Assessed support, complete design and relevant approvals. |
Identify the masonry and compatible repair
Ask the assessor to identify the existing brick, mortar, joint profile and backing before specifying repair or an addition. A visually similar material can differ in size or behaviour. Explain whether the concern is a small damaged area, a rebuilt section or new work, and ask which investigation supports the scope.
Openings, garden walls and boundaries
A wall’s role determines the design and work scope. Structural openings and retaining work need their own assessed arrangements; a decorative wall detail should not be reused automatically. Establish boundaries, access rights and relevant party-wall requirements for the actual proposal. Planning permission does not decide every private boundary issue. Ask who handles foundations, support and adjoining surfaces. No generic brick thickness or footing recipe here replaces competent design.

What should this quotation actually cover?
Ask whether the quote includes…
Compare preparation, materials, joints, support requirements, access and finishing on the same scope. Ask how matching limits are handled and whether the underlying cause of damage requires separate investigation.
- Material, joint and matching specification.
- Designed support, preparation and safe access.
- Waste, VAT, reinstatement and approval of variations.
Handover and local help
Compare completed extent and finish with the agreed proposal. Keep material and design records plus relevant compliance information. Report recurring movement or water problems through the appropriate professional route. For an enquiry, send postcode, intended work or symptoms, approximate extent and access constraints. We review suitable local requests but do not operate a brickwork team, book attendance or certify the structural design remotely.
